Read stories based on the memories of Maryport women and their relatives from tales of rations to memories of making do and mend. What will you discover?

This website was developed as part of the Maryport Women in War celebrations in November 2021, and formed the basis of an exhibition at The Maryport Settlement at High Street, Maryport, CA15 6BQ

Get involved

In 2021 the Royal British Legion celebrated the role of women in wartime, and a number of community events took place in the week 6-14 November to celebrate the role of Maryport Women in War, including exhibitions at St Mary’s Church and The Settlement at Castle Hill.

The local community helped with the following:

  • Contributing their family stories, photos, documents

  • Making poppies for a display at the Memorial Gardens

  • Researching and testing war-time recipes using ingredients available during rationing

It is not too late to contribute your stories to this ongoing project?
