About

Prompted by a suggestion from a local resident, Maryport Town Council decided to purchase a silhouette celebrating the role of women in wartime from Royal British Legion Industries to be placed in the Memorial Gardens at Netherhall Corner, next to the Tommy silhouette, in time for Remembrance Sunday 2021. An exhibition on this topic was also suggested, and from there the project gained momentum and other organisations became involved, including St Mary’s Church, The Settlement at Castle Hill, Maryport Schools, and local businesses.

The purpose of this web site was to facilitate collection of resources, including photos, family histories, oral history recordings, recipes, and other material related to the experience of Maryport and district women in wartime, and the social changes arising from this. This archive was  used for an exhibition at the Settlement at Castle Hill, High Street, Maryport, CA15 6BQ from 6-14 November 2021, and could form the basis of future research and publications on this topic.
